Housemaster News and Weekend Details

Dear All

It is so good to get some rain here, but again for only one day it seems. The weekends weather looks good, but cold. I was reading somewhere this week that there have been fewer cold fronts coming through than in previous years. Where has the family's of fornts gone. One has to ask the question why, but apparently there is no scientific reason. I hear everyone shouting global warming! Last weekend I was in Grahamstown with all the rugby lads; they have had more rain in the Eastern Cape since Easter than many locals can remember; this after a terrible drought. No one is complaining.

It is always wonderful for me to go to Grahamstown as I have loads of good mates from my years spent at Rhodes University who are now either farmers or teachers. I was asked by such a local on the side of the pitch in the typical Eastern Cape drawl, ‘ Hey swaar, whaaat’s the siiiimalarity tween faaaarmers and teeeachiz ? Well the answer is not what you are probably thinking......we both care for animals, but ‘teechiz also wear gumboots swaar’ was his reply. I understandably scratched my chin and thought of home.  What a wonderful weekend with such amazing people. So friendly. St Andrews is a glorious school so similar to us, but yet so different. It felt to me that time had stood a lot longer there before moving on. Not much has changed since I was at varsity! Despite all the lovely people and the warm atmosphere, I was somewhat sad as my team was the only side to lose which my fellow colleagues on tour failed to stop reminding me about! Well done to all the White House lads who were on tour.

Back in the House, I have met with the stooges and we have upped the prep monitoring and tightened up enormously. It is my firm belief that if boys do two hours a day of supervised and disciplined prep time; that is easily enough.

We will transfer to the new geezer system on Monday....only a month late. Well done to the boys for not making to much of a fuss when hot water was in scant supply. I thought the matrics where the only ones to make a meal of it. Big softies. However, I do understand as I know when I was a boarder a hot shower was a highlight of the day and hugely social as we had communal showers. I can hear the Moms groaning with horror at the thought!

I have now collected four quotes for the quad artificial lawn...so far pretty pricey. I am awaiting one more quote to come in today and then I will meet with the House Committee and discuss a plan of attack to raise the money!

The school plays Wynberg this weekend. I hope it dries up before then. Good luck to all the boys playing and I hope to see you all around the fields tonight or tomorrow.

Western Province to win 24 – 12. The Boks to win 27-22.

Take care
Angus
